Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Many of my students have come to America within the last year and are eager to unlock the promise that this country brings. However, without fluency in English, much of the learning that happens in school is frustrating and difficult for them to access. Over 600 students attend my elementary school and they are a diverse bunch! Our Spanish/English Dual Language program draws many students to the school, both native English and native Spanish speakers. Our student body is about 92% students of color and at least 60% of our students speak another language at home. Our free and reduced lunch rate is over 70%. The students I work with are just beginning their journey of learning English. They come from a range of countries, mostly Vietnam and a variety of Central American countries. They are polite, respectful, and eager to learn!
My Project
Our school runs a 40-minute before school program during which students and their parents are invited to come in and participate in a variety of activities. We love seeing parents snuggled up in a bean bag, reading with their child, kids working on puzzles, playing games or building with LEGO bricks together.
Despite the success we've had with our morning program, we are lacking some of the materials we need to engage ALL students and families!
We are a English/Spanish Dual Immersion school, and 75% of our families speak Spanish at home. However, all of the books in our morning program library are in English, and we would like to be able to have a similar number of Spanish books for students to read.
Similarly, we have quite a few 100+ piece puzzles that have been donated, but 40 minutes is not enough time to complete this type of puzzle. Therefore, we would like to purchase some puzzles with fewer pieces so that students can complete them and so that younger students can participate.
It is a great joy to see students and parents learning and having fun together in the mornings. We would appreciate your help in making the time even more meaningful!
