The more time students spend engaged in learning, the more they will learn. This is my first year teaching in the Franklin McKinley School District.I teach all subjects to a 5/6 grade combination class. Most of my students are English Language Learners and many are from low income families. I see the need for dry erase boards and markers in my room. I often introduce new concepts to my students and have them work out the problems on a sheet of paper. However, it is difficult for me to assess whether each student understands the problem. White boards would enable every student to be working on the problem, staying engaged in the lesson. Students could then hold up their answer in front of them, and I would be able to quickly see who understands, and who does not. This allows me to adjust instruction to student needs. Seeing that it is often difficult to keep students engaged in math, I am also asking for math manipulatives and games. Many of my students are English Language Learners. It is often more effective to show rather than tell them how to complete the problems. Math manipulatives would make that possible. Manipulatives also benefit more kinesthetic learners who like to be "hands on" learners. The math games are for students to practice the skills they have learned in an engaging and fun way. Please consider funding this project. These items would be resources directly benefiting students every day in my classroom.
