My students need 20 copies of the book, "Rosa"; 10 copies of "Rosa Parks: Civil Rights Pioneer"; 10 copies of "Bus Ride That Changed History: The Story of Rosa Parks"; and 5 copies of "If a Bus Could Talk: The Story of Rosa Parks."
My classroom involves more than 700 students.
I am an English/Language Arts teacher who provides services to the teachers at my 5th/6th grade school. I model strategies for teaching ELA standards in classrooms, so I am always looking for new, creative ways to present material to the teachers and students.
Our school is focusing on teaching active reading strategies for our students to use while reading nonfiction. Nonfiction can't be read in the same way as "story". Students need different strategies to conquer the material and obtain meaning. They need to organize their material and learn to take notes.
I teach best practice strategies by using nonfiction picture books. I want the students to focus on the strategy, so using material that isn't too challenging enables the students to concentrate on the skill. I have chosen four different books that focus on the story of Rosa Parks.
Before reading, students will be given the opportunity to list what they think they know about her (anticipation guide). Then they will divide into small groups and search through the material to find out if their information was correct. They will have post-it notes to mark areas where they have found new information or where they have found that some of our pre-reading information was incorrect. We will add/delete information as we research. Then students will form "I wonder" questions- ideas that they have been thinking about after reading the different books.
Learning to take notes and to organize information is extremely important as students move to middle school. I am trying to prepare them to be thinkers and to know how to use reading strategies to help them understand nonfiction information and to be able to ask themselves questions. These materials can be used over and over again as I model in different classrooms.
