The kids that I teach are a fun and enthusiastic group of 4th - 8th graders enrolled in an extra reading-focused class. These kids receive small-group reading lessons on specific skills that they are working towards mastering. My students are extremely hard-working, and they appreciate the time they have for focused instruction.
Many of my students enjoy reading despite the challenges that occur as they work to meet the high expectations of our current reading and ELA standards.
However, some of them are in need of a spark to reignite the joy of reading literature and informational texts that they experienced as young children. It is my goal to help these kids acquire the reading skills that they need to be successful students, as well as, help them discover confidence and delight while reading!
My students will apply the reading skills that they've mastered through targeted reading instruction using the high-interest articles in Scholastic Storyworks and Action magazines. These articles will span a variety of topics and genres that will engage my diverse learners. Common-core aligned assessments are included so that I will be able to monitor their progress and make adjustments to their lessons as needed.
Whether it's a debatable current events article, an engaging fantasy story, or an intriguing informational text, my hope is that these magazines will spark my students' interests and make class more enjoyable.
Additionally, the cross-curricular content will help my students build background knowledge and reinforce concepts learned in their science and social studies classes.
Lastly, these magazines include online components that will help me differentiate for individuals, as well as, provide students with digital versions of the texts. I will be able to access the same article at multiple lexile levels to print or assign as an online task. My students will certainly benefit from the variety of content and presentation modes that these magazines have to offer.
