I have been blessed with a wonderful group of first grade students. Throughout our year together my students grow so much and in so many different ways. Although we have support from our parents and the community, there are still some resources that are not readily available to the teachers or our students.
Our school is a Title I School in a small, rural community with a student population of approximately 600 students.
My students come from various economic backgrounds, and there are many instances where families simply aren't able to provide a wide variety of materials for the most efficient student learning. The students simply use what is available to them. I would love to provide them with more hands-on opportunities to learn.
My Project
First graders learn best by doing! We can tell students all day long about how something works, but until they can see it for themselves they don't always truly understand it.
One of the best things about first grade is that students can learn so much by "playing" with STEM materials.
They are so engaged and excited with the resources that they don't realize they are learning. There are so many awesome kits available to teachers and students. The kits not only provide the pieces but also provide students with instructions to help guide them through the building and construction process.
I am looking to add more resources to my STEM bins allowing my students to construct various objects. One of the resources I think my students would enjoy is the Tumble Trax Magnetic Marble Run. This activity will allow them to create and attach different tracks to the white board for the marble to follow. Blocks are another favorite material of my students. The Educational Construction Engineering Building Block set I have selected would allow them to construct and engineer many different things with the help of the guides included. Along the line of blocks, the Mental Blox Critical Thinking Game truly makes my students think about how they can stack the various size and shape blocks so they don't fall over. This set will help with critical thinking. The Wheels, Straws, and Connectors Stem Toys is the last set of construction materials I have selected for my students. With this set they will have to think about how to use connectors to build with the wheels and straws. Again, critical thinking skills are needed and will be better developed the more they "play" and work hands-on with these materials.
