Mrs. Miller from Malvern AR is requesting flexible seating through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.

Engaging Spaces for Reading

My students need options for some comfortable places to sit during free reading time to make it more pleasurable, relaxing, and therefore make it more engaging to practice different reading strategies.

My Students

I am new to the district and to this state and will be starting my first year teaching. After professional development and curriculum planning meetings, I have learned most of our students are behind in reading and writing. Most students live in poverty, and I want to make school a safe and fun place for them.

Students here thrive through interactive learning and choice, and I want to provide more opportunities for each of them in my classroom by obtaining more seating options.

What I love about sixth grade, is that students are trying to be more independent and are even more in charge of their learning if you give them the opportunity!

My Project

The students in my classroom are confined to their chairs and tables. It is a goal of mine to add more flexible seating options during class, so they can be more comfortable and engaged in learning, especially during free reading time.

After reading The Book Whisperer by Donalyn Miller, I knew I wanted to center my classroom in the same way-students using their own books to apply reading strategies.

Students get to choose their own reading books, and have the opportunity to engage in free reading for up to 30 minutes per day in my room. I find students to be more interested and engaged in their books when they are able to move around and settle in more comfortable spaces to really delve into their book.

Studies show that students achievement improves when they are given the opportunity to choose their reading materials; I plan to guide students through their books by teaching varying reading strategies and having regular book conferences.
