My Project

We really need more microscopes to view specimens that we study. We have a few 400x microscopes but bacteria cannot be seen at this magnification. We need a 1000x microscope to view the bacteria types. I also have my students study genetics and fruit flies. I want them to have a microscope that they can visibly see the differences in traits of the fruit flies that they cross together. We can then dissect the fruit flies and extract their salivary glands to view their chromosomes. Both of these microscopes will make science come alive for the hard to see parts. Other activity materials I am asking for are replacement materials for other engaging labs I have done with my students. They include more supplies to restock our hydroponics system to grow lettuce with the rockwool, clay pebbles and trays. I also want to teach students the chemical reaction that takes place with nature prints by soaking t shirts in a chemical solution and exposing them to UV radiation. This will really help supplement their learning of chemical reaction types. The foam darts, volumetric flasks and alkaline seltzer will help reinforce my teaching of reaction rates and factors that affect the rates. I will have students quantitatively measure how far the darts will fly when aka seltzer reacts with water. The specimens will help my students see the comparative anatomy when I teach about evolution.
