My students need 6 Go Links to connect probes and sensors to their laptops at their lab stations.
Science and math can be naturally integrated with the use of Vernier probes and sensors. They can measure things like our heart rate, blood pressure and temperature during different activities while creating a dynamic graph on the laptop - a natural connection between math and science.
We have 165 7th grade life science students each year in our middle school (grades 6-8).
Our public school encompasses a number of small rural communities along with our own town. Because our town is so close to a metropolitan area, a number of our students come from homes in which both parents commute to city jobs daily. Because of this our students come from a wide range of socioeconomic backgrounds.
Life science encompasses everything from cells (of plants or animals) to tissues, to organs and organ systems, to organisms living in and adapting to their ecosystems. In covering so much material in one year of 40 minute class periods, we need to cover things efficiently in short amounts of time and somehow make connections to students' prior knowledge. Also, we need to make natural connections between subject areas in school to better reflect the outside world. Using Vernier probes and sensors, the students will be observing and collecting data while the software is automatically graphing this input. Students will automatically be covering benchmarks on gathering, analyzing and interpreting data while they're trying to form explanations and predictions to take the learning a step further. While they're synthesizing this information, they're further learning about living things, and their unique structures and functions and behaviors in their ever changing environments.
We hope through gathering and interpreting data students will make a natural connection between science and math.
In a series of hands on, fun activities students will learn about the human body and how its many parts, from microscopic cells to full body systems, work efficiently together. We can only do this with the help of Go Links which connect sensors to laptops and provide the needed graphing software.Read More
