My Students
My students show up every day smiling, eager, and excited to learn. They vary in age from 5 to 7, all with varying levels of prior knowledge. I work with the group of students who struggle the most - the 7-year-old from Guam who has never been in school, the ELL student who has difficulty counting even in her native language, and the child who knows most letters but struggles with fine motor skills.
I am forever trying to find ways to reach this diverse group of students.
We do a lot of drills. Repetition and multi-sensory instruction seem to work best, but I want to provide more engaging opportunities for learning. The materials included in this project will help my students learn their letters and numbers in an engaging fashion. They can also be utilized by the classroom teachers during centers to provide differentiation for all students.
My Project
Some of my students have never been outside the city they live in. They have never had the opportunity to visit a zoo. They have only seen exotic animals on television and in books.
"Lions aren't real." This is what a student said to my one day during a discussion about the zoo.
This field trip will provide my students with the opportunity to see and interact with animals that they have never even heard of.
Students will learn about the different environments animals live in as well as the adaptations they need to survive in those environments. A trip to the zoo, especially for a child who has never been, can make science truly engaging.
