We are a small school with big needs. Our school is a Title I school filled with smart, funny, sweet, kiddos. They love to read but often we don't have books that have characters that act, sound, or look like them. Last year my class read Esperanza Rising. I could see the joy on their faces and hear the wonder in their voices when they read about a Mexican girl who spoke Spanish just like them.
My students come from homes filled with love but not a lot of resources.
I feel that it's my job as an educator to introduce them to as many things as I can whether it's quality literature, experiences they may not get to have, or caring relationships with adults other than their family.
I feel honored to work with these hard working children and families.
Having a text that kids are excited to read makes a real impact on their motivation. Each Storyworks magazine is full of text that has highlighted vocabulary words, opinion pieces, and fiction and nonfiction pieces. They also have illustrations that my students enjoy.
The kids love having magazines they can take home and show their families what they are learning in class.
I have subscribed to this magazine before and am always amazed at how many standards I can meet for 4th grade by the content of these periodicals. I love seeing how excited the students are when a new packet of magazines are delivered!
