My students need rechargeable batteries, chargers, carrying cases, and headphones to fully implement the electronic reading devices that we have in our classroom.
Developing strong readers is a focal point in first grade. What could be more important than teaching a child to read, gaining information from text, comprehending and relating to what is being read? There is something perhaps that is more important... to acquire a life-long LOVE of reading!
My students are like eager little sponges just waiting to soak up knowledge and yearning to be successful in every new challenge.
Reading is a constant presence in our classroom every day. I not only stress the importance of reading in daily life, but also strive to make reading a "chosen" activity, rather than a "have to" requirement. Through my varied reading activities, I hope to create children that are strong, confident readers. My hope is that in their successful adult lives they will remember that love they had for a favorite picture book or perhaps the first chapter book they successfully read on their own and instill the importance of reading in their own children.
My Project
To enhance our reading program this year, I have purchased electronic reading devices for the children to use. These devices read stories, display dictionary skills, and provide phonics and vocabulary activities for the children. Some of the devices have LCD touch screens which are wonderful to use, but can deplete a set of regular batteries in just a couple of days! Our class is lacking the support materials they need to accompany this technology, such as headphones, rechargeable batteries, battery chargers, and carrying cases. I have already provided the technology, now we just need a little support to keep it productive!
Being able to use the new devices properly in the classroom is a great way to merge curriculum with current technology.
It presents the practice of a needed skill in a manner that makes it a desirable activity, not just a boring task. The enhancement of receiving our headphones, batteries, chargers, and cases will allow more children to use the devices at one time and for the devices to run longer and reach more readers. Please help us gain the most from our new technology!
