Engaging Reading Sources to Meet Curriculum Goals and Proficiency Standards!
Help me give my students a quality education. My students need engaging and current reading materials like the novel I am Malala, Scholastic's Science Spin and Time's Edge that meet the demands of the 6th grade curriculum.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is located near downtown Salt Lake City. The neighborhood that surrounds our school is rich in culture and diversity. Many working families live there, many just getting by paycheck to paycheck. Our students are among the most impoverished in the area. Because our school is centrally located in an inner city part of town, the needs are vast and my power of influence can reach an eclectic group of learners from different cultural, socio-economic, and educational needs.
The achievement gap is real here, and these students deserve the best resources out there.
Less than a third of my students met proficiency state standards. Budgets limit the funds available to provide all the necessary materials each classroom needs to create a learning center of high quality teaching tools. Effective teaching tools engage students and helps them meet learning goals! That is why our students need your support.
My Project
Up-to-date curriculum is an investment districts have to think twice about. Currently, my district does not provide an official and current curriculum to teach Science and Social Studies since the state is adopting new standards to address these subjects effectively. Textbook selection that meets these new standards takes time, and leaves educators with limited and outdated resources to meet the demands of the grade level objectives today.
Interesting, well developed, current and inspiring reading sources will engage all students in the classroom to reach reading, writing, science, and social studies goals.
These materials will inspire our students to pursue careers in math and science, become more informed citizens, and become life long learners.
Magazines like Science Spin and Time's Edge will supplement other online resources to teach the Science and Social Studies 6th grade content in a meaningful way through current cutting edge developments. The I am Malala novel will not only be a source of literature and provide social consciousness these students need, but will put social issues in perspective through a real life case study. These materials will also be used by students for years to come, widening the impact these resources will have in the community.
