My students need an extensive classroom library to ensure high engagement. The entire 9th grade English team will be able to use these resources to instill a passion for reading and to improve reading comprehension.
I will be teaching English 9 in an urban high school next year. The majority of my students are well below grade level in reading and struggle to independently access the material in the current curriculum. Due to the students' lack of success, they become frustrated and disengaged. My students enjoy the classroom setting, but they struggle to master the content. I, too, become frustrated because my students are unable to demonstrate mastery of the skills. Because many of my peers experience similar situations, I began to discuss my concerns with my colleagues and to research possible solutions to the problem.
After extensive discussion and research, I focused my efforts on the reading workshop model because it not only develops independent readers, but it also creates high-level analysis, critical thinking, and a joy for reading.
I hope to instill a passion for reading and learning to a group of students who have not experienced significant success previously.
My Project
The Lucy Calkins Reading workshop has provided lists of books that are not only stimulating and engaging for students, but they are also challenging. This creates an atmosphere of learning that encourages critical thinking and application. One element of the workshop model is to have an extensive classroom library to ensure all students are able to connect with some type of literature to make his or her reading experience pleasurable.
By offering a comprehensive classroom library, I am offering my students a whole new world to which they may never have been able to access.
Not only will they develop a passion for reading, but they will also be able to experience wisdom and understanding that can open their minds to their futures.
