My second grade team teaches in a small rural community in Illinois. Annie has been teaching for 19 years, Jessi is a brand new addition to our team this year, while I have been teaching 27 years with 22 of those years in second grade.
Our second grade students LOVE to be read to and are learning to become engaged readers by learning how to use comprehension strategies to truly dissect a text.
We, as a team, are constantly looking for ways to improve our reading instruction to be able to meet the needs of all our students.
It is amazing to see the growth the students make throughout the year in their comprehension! Where first graders are focused on the act of decoding a text, second graders are “diving deep” into the text to understand the author’s purpose and message. This is the age that a child becomes a true reader!
My Project
A huge part of our second grade reading curriculum is to instill lifelong comprehension skills to ensure learning and understanding.
These engaging mentor texts will help students to be able to deepen their understanding, focus on the structure of the story, and to use the different reading strategies and skills.
We believe in making learning fun and engaging and these texts definitely will help with this!
These books are the main focus each week. These focus books will be read, reread, and revisited throughout the week. This is where our vocabulary and deep comprehension practice happens!
The mentor books that we have chosen are a variety of levels, because we feel that is important to expose our students to many text levels. They are very capable of making deep connections with our guidance!
With these texts, we are looking to build our students’ vocabulary, enhance their understanding, and give them the tools they will need to understand those higher level books.
These read aloud mentor texts also initiate discussions for deeper understanding, and allow for teacher modeling of how to stop and check for comprehension.
