If you could look into my classroom right now you'd see students reading a variety of middle grade and young adult novels. They love reading and gobble up books with enthusiasm. These are students from the northern suburbs of Minneapolis. Our charter school pulls from a large area of the northern suburbs of the Twin Cities.
Finding engaging, modern nonfiction has been a challenge, and yet it is this very type of reading that many students crave.
My students need nonfiction books in our classroom library, to prepare them for their future schooling and to inform them of the greater world around them.
My Project
My classroom library is great, full of fiction titles for kids to choose from and I'm really good at recommending novels for students to connect with. I'd really like students to stretch their reading muscles with nonfiction. I've chosen books published in 2018 such as The Grand Escape, The Faithful Spy: Dietrich Bonhoeffer and the Plot to Kill Hitler, Just Mercy, We are Not Yet Equal: Understanding our Racial Divide, Bonnie and Clyde: The Making of a Legend, Spooked!: How a Radio Broadcast and The War of the Wolds Sparked the 1938 Invasion of America, and Capsized!: The Forgotten Story of the SS Eastland Disaster.
