My students come from a variety of backgrounds, socio-economnic statuses, and academic abilities. We are a Title 1 school in a suburban/rural small town.
"We are loyal leaders who are supportive of each other and their goals, we are examples of good friends and leaders." Those are the words my students use to describe themselves every morning.
Our class mission statement, written by my students, is the best way that I can describe my students. They truly live by those words. They continuously impress me with their desire for learning and their thoughtfulness of the other students around them.
Not all students come to school with a love of reading. Many times it is because they have not yet found the types of books they enjoy reading. As a teacher I introduce students to characters and stories by reading the first book in a series aloud to the class, then the students are encouraged to read more. Unfortunately, I do not have the subsequent books from those series in my classroom.
When students are able to connect with engaging characters from books they are more likely to continue reading.
By providing complete series in my classroom library I will give my students the opportunity to continue reading about the characters they love. My students love The Lemonade Wars, Choose Your Own Adventure books, The Series of Unfortunate Events, and 39 Clues. Having the entire series of these books available to them will ensure that they continue reading for pleasure.
Students who read for pleasure do better academically. Reading an entire series allows students to become comfortable with vocabulary used throughout the series. Reading and entire series will also strengthen predicting skills, analyzing text and characteristics abilities, and allow readers to feel more confident with familiar characters and phrasing.
