Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our world is changing rapidly and the way that we teach students is changing too. Students need hands-on activities to keep learning interesting and relevant to them.
My class is a first grade class in the most economically depressed part of our school district.
Our school district is located in a rural part of Texas. At our school, over 77% of our students are identified as being economically disadvantaged. In my classroom, it is also important to note that 1/3 of the students are repeating first grade, due to their inability to master skills while attending other schools. This great number of students is in-part due to our school having over a 25% mobility rate. It is imperative for me to close the learning gaps for these students so that they will be successful during the rest of their educational careers.
My Project
I have requested several interactive white board games. These can be used with the technology I already have available to help students become more interested and engaged in phonics instruction. Students can use these independently or in groups at literacy station times. I can also engage all of the students in my classroom with whole group instruction using these games.
I have also requested several hands-on learning centers and puzzles to help facilitate student exploration with words. These learning centers help to guide students to discover ways to manipulate letters and words and help students to become more engaged in their learning. As students discover and notice things on their own, they begin to take ownership of their learning and have a better opportunity to make connections and remember what they have learned.
The items that I have requested will help students learn in a way that is hands-on and interactive.
This generation of learners requires different resources than just a pencil and paper and it is important that I meet students where they are and help them to see that learning can be fun and engaging.
