My students are a group of kind, intelligent, brave, caring, amazing 5-6 year olds in the heart of Annapolis, MD. We live in an area that is rich in resources and experiences, but often there is a great discrepancy between those resources in our hometown, and what my students are able to experience and use as learning tools themselves. Our school is a Title 1 school, which means that we are high poverty. Many of my students are immigrants, or have parents who are immigrants. Others live in subsidized housing communities. Often, school is the only opportunity that my students have to be immersed in literacy and learning. For some of my students, school is the only consistent place where they are receiving meals. Despite those challenges, my students come to school every day hungry to learn and grow.
My students deserve as high quality of education as any other child.
I believe that it is my responsibility to provide my students with a high quality school experience, so that they can go on to be successful professionals.
These materials will help my Kindergarten ESOL students to grasp new language in an engaging and fun way. Early Childhood ESOL instruction should be developmentally appropriate and incorporate high-quality materials and manipulatives such as storyboards, image cards, play dough, and a giant microphone to practice speaking. Our young learners deserve better than just white boards and work sheets, and these materials will make language learning come alive as they practice reading, writing, speaking, and listening in a hands-on and exciting way! Young learners are a special group, and young English learners are too. This special population requires special instruction, and these materials will allow me to meet their needs and help make their first experience in school a great one.
