This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I’m lucky enough to be teaching at the elementary school that I was taught at. Some of my grade school teachers work there, and it has been wonderful being a part of their team. As for my students, I’ve also been really lucky to have had two excellent classes since I started, and can't wait to meet the rest of my future students. Our school is a Title I school and we have a very diverse population attending Lincoln. We have a range of very gifted students, to low students, to an assortment of EL students. What excites me the most about teaching, is getting my students engaged and excited to learn. The icing on top of that is that lightbulb going off above their head when they truly are learning/comprehending what I’m teaching them. It’s such a wonderful reward to see.

My Project

It is my goal this year to find novels for my class to read and encourage reading through out the year. When I plan my own lessons and units in my classroom, I think back to the memorable lessons and activities that I experienced in grade school. And I remember a majority of the novel studies that I read beginning at 3rd grade. Not only do I want to find engaging, fun novels for them to read, I want to connect their ELA with other subjects. So they can use prior knowledge while reading. Books like The Hundred Dresses is a perfect example for them to connect their Social Studies material to the book. They will be able to connect to a story to help them learn.
