This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our school is an inner-city school and most students live across the street in a federally subsidized housing project. Our student population is unique because 60% of the students are English Language Learners. Of that 60%, 95% are from refugee families. The student population is 94% minorities. 98% of the students are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch.
My school has one of the most culturally diverse populations of students in the district.
We celebrate our differences by bringing our students, family, and community together. My students are excited to come to school every day because of the joy they find in learning and the growth they are making.
I am proud that our school is the center of our community. It is our students' home. They feel safe, loved, and cared for. This is my fourth year teaching there, and each year I'm there I realize the impact I have on my students' education and lives.
My Project
Developing a love of reading requires the right books. Many students gravitate towards fiction books, but non-fiction books can be just as interesting if not more. Many non-fiction books that are provided at our school are old, not engaging, or not at an appropriate reading level.
Students love to learn about the world around them.
The books that I have chosen will help them learn about social studies and science. In second grade, a major focus for our writing standards is research and informative writing. These books give students access to topics that they want to learn about. They are at their reading level and have engaging illustrations and photographs.
