Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Our school is classified as Title I. All of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. Our demographic population is 48% female and 52% male. 56% of the students are African American, 4% are White, 20% are Hispanic/Latino, 8% Asian, and 12% are of mixed race. Our school has 1:1 technology. We have carts of Chromebooks in every classroom. We are an urban community school. I am the librarian and am starting to create a makerspace. I ordered a few coding pieces but now that the students are interested, I need more.

My Project

The students will be able to creatively problem solve using the maker space and coding games, LEGO building blocks, robots, and STEM activities. I have created an area in the media center to allow students and/or classes to come explore. They can do individual games, coding, and projects, or the class can learn together the various projects in the maker space area. My teachers and students are excited to begin this journey in the media center. Even though I currently only have a few items, they are being well used, and the students are asking for more! Please help me in giving our students opportunities they cannot find at home.
