Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Can you imagine not having a library or access to attention-grabbing reading materials when you were a kid? My students are struggling readers who have not yet learned how fun it can be to learn through books and magazines.
They live in a rural community where poverty is the norm.
Some of them were not exposed to English until they began school, and all of them have limited exposure to rich language and reading materials. They are the lowest readers in third grade at their local public school. So far their experiences with reading have taught them that it is hard, hard work and they are not good at it.
My Project
I would like to change the experience of failure for my students into one of success and fun with reading. That new experience could be the key to opening the world of reading, thus unlocking their education. This project will provide my students with magazines that have vivid pictures and words at their reading level to use during a special choice time in reading class. I hope to have enough variety that each student will find a magazine with topics that interest him/her.
You can help give my third graders exposure to quality materials that spark their interest in reading - for the fun of learning something they are excited about.
With these weekly magazines they can even take home their own copy!
