My students need high interest materials such as magnetic puzzles, hands-on alphabet materials, and fun open ended math games to engage them and enhance their learning experience.
The best part about teaching kindergartners is their enthusiasm for learning. I love the creativity that comes along with the teaching profession and I am always looking for new ways to spark their interest. It is my job to lay the foundation that will instill a love of learning.
Most of my students have not attended pre-school and have limited life experiences.
Over the past couple of years I have had opportunity to go on several home visits and see firsthand where my students spend most of their time. It has been a very eye opening experience to connect with my families on a more personal level. It is even clearer to me now that every morning my students come to school facing many different challenges, and it is my job to make them feel safe and loved so that we can continue on this journey together. With up to thirty students in each class, this task can seem daunting, but it is my heart's work to make a difference in each of their lives.
My Project
I love getting my kindergarteners excited about learning and setting a strong foundation for their educational experience! Part of that means using high interest materials to engage them.
The high interest materials included in this project will be used by my students as entry activities to get them started out on the right foot for the day and during one on one time with a teacher.
Our classroom is differentiated to meet the needs of all our learners and the puzzles and magnetic abc and number boards are great practice for students who are still working on fine motor skills and spatial awareness. I have included water color sets as well, because many of our students are not able to pay their supply fees but still enjoy art and painting. I love to incorporate art experiences as often as I can and these paints will be used often by our kindergarteners. And last, we will use the alphabet play dough stamps as a literacy center for children to work on letter awareness and making short words.
