Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
La Academia is a dual language elementary school in Delaware with a focus on nurturing bilingual, bi-literate and multicultural children. Our school opened in August 2014 with two grade levels, Kindergarten and 1st grade. The school added a grade level every year in order to grow to a K-5 school in 2018.
80% of our students are minority.
54% are English Language Learners.
68% of our students are from low income and inner-city homes. The entire school receives free breakfast and lunch.
Students will learn to think critically and take action in their classrooms and communities through project-based learning and by engaging in real life issues. Our academic program will provide students with a sense of community and global awareness as well as 21st century skills. The academic program combines a Two-Way Dual Language Immersion model and Project Based Learning (PBL) methodologies. The integration of these two learning approaches supports students’ instructional and language acquisition needs.
My Project
My Kindergarten students need to develop their fine motor skills. This has been very challenging to do in distance learning.
Having the scissors and the pencil grip will allow me to correct the position of the grip during live class, when they write the letters and numbers.
Every student needs their own pair in order to abide by social distancing rules.
The writing journal will allow my students to practice name writing, letter and number formation with the correct lines for their age. It will also allow them to respond with drawings to stories that I read and to begin to write sentences and CVC words.
The puppets will support my virtual teaching to better engage my kindergarten students when learning letters, reading stories and learning about the community helpers. This will help capture their attention and engage them in the learning with me.
