This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are a diverse group of 5 to 10 year olds, majority of whom are from economically disadvantaged neighborhoods throughout the city of New Haven. I teach science to all 350 elementary students from kindergarten to fourth grade and have a total of sixteen classes. During my class students are engaged in inquiry-based science where they learn how to conduct scientific research to explore natural phenomena. As an educator, I strive to ensure that all students, regardless of age, race, gender, class, ethnicity, language, or ability level, have access to a high-quality education. I am particularly concerned with the disparities that are faced by minority students and students with disabilities. I am most passionate about providing equal educational opportunities for students in the areas of science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics (STEAM). Students are encouraged to ask questions and explore their world through science!
My Project
I want my students to continue to question and wonder, even outside the walls of my classroom. My science classroom is a happy place for my students where they are excited to explore, discover, and create. Now that we have transitioned to distance learning, my students have limited access to supplies to participate in hands-on inquiry activities. These supplies will allow students to continue to experiment and build while at home during the pandemic. Students will be provided distance learning kits to engage in the areas of science, technology, engineering, art and math at home. They will also receive motivational incentives for participation with the Scientist of the Month awards program.
