Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"My students make me feel proud. People always say one person can't make a difference, but I have proof that these kids have made a difference." -Michelle Roosma
My students are awesome, five to six-year-old kindergartners.
Some of my students have never been to school, while some have had some preschool or transitional kindergarten.
My students love coming to our live Google Meet class meetings to learn. I love seeing and teaching them. I only wish I could offer them more! It is bliss to come to work each morning and be greeted by loving students on Google Meet.
My Project
In October, I noticed that my students were getting very bored and not as excited as they used to when we first started distance learning. To make learning from home more engaging, I started creating "Surprise Bags" filled with STEM and arts and crafts projects. Every two days, students get an opportunity to open a "Surprise Bag" to do an activity online as a whole class. I noticed that my students loved these "Surprise Bags" and are super excited to come to Google Meet just to see what might be in these bags.
As an educator, I believe that a hands-on, creative, and balanced approach to instruction is the most successful framework for developing skills in young children, and this quote from Benjamin Franklin, "Tell me and I forget...Teach me and I remember...Involve me and I learn."
In a previously funded project, we were lucky to get some flower bulbs and flower pots donated. We are in need of some soil pods so I can put the bulb, pots, and pods into a spring "Surprise Bag". These soil pods will not make a big mess and it would be a perfect item to teach students about how plants grow. After learning about how plants grow, they will give their flower plant to their moms as a Mother's Day gift. I am also requesting markers and blank photo key chains to use as another surprise bag for early summer as an arts and craft project for Father's Day gift. The storage containers will help keep all the "Surprise Bags" organized and safe until I drop them off at my students' homes. Thank you in advance for your support and for helping me make distance learning engaging for my students!
