This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My scholars are vibrant, joyful learners in grades K-4 who happen to have special educational needs. As children in one of Chicago's most impoverished neighborhoods, my scholars face seemingly endless barriers to learning. Despite this, they astound me each and every day with their determination, positivity and growth. My scholars have disabilities ranging from autism to learning disabilities to emotional/social disabilities.
My school is a Title I school that services a population that is 99% minority and 99% free and reduced lunch.
Help my kids improve their odds so they can become leaders in their community!
My Project
We read to lead! My scholars are growing as readers and need high-interest, age appropriate books, including graphic novels, popular book series, high interest/low level readers as well as some childhood classics of literature. My scholars are so excited about their reading this year. Access to these popular and high interest books will motivate them to read, read, READ! Research shows the most important factor contributing to reader growth and progress is that children have access to high-interest materials to self-select and read independently. Please help my scholars grow their reading superpowers by putting these great books in their hands.
