My Students

There are so many adjectives to describe my students. They are caring, hardworking and resilient. Fifty percent of students receive free or reduced-price lunch, and a significant chunk of students are further supported by our backpack buddies weekend food program.

Despite, or perhaps in part because of these challenges, my class and the school as a whole are active participants in food drives, penny drives for cancer, and raising money with Jump Rope for Heart.

My students love science, creating, and making. They crave opportunities to do anything artistic or creative.

With many students facing a large variety of challenges at home and at school, you wouldn't necessarily expect a group of 25 to 30 5th graders to be fully engaged and attentive. However, when science time comes around, this is often the reality. Students who are rarely engaged or successful in class shine during science and when making art.

My Project

This upcoming school year I will be teaching Science and Social Emotional Learning to four sections of 5th graders. The current curriculum we are using is delivered to the school in three units throughout the year. Each unit is designed to take about 6 weeks. This allows me time to review content from the beginning of the year, from prior grades, and to go deeper into concepts.

New supplemental materials will allow the students to be engaged in science all year long, not just when we have a science kit.

The dome plastic cups will be used to create terrariums to explore life science and environmental science concepts. The stream table will be used for a variety of concepts and even be available for students to use with their STEAM Expo projects (our updated version of the science fair).
