My students need emergent readers - TheLittle Red Hen Big Book, Corduroy, The Carrot Seed, Harry the Dirty Dog and more - to increase their reading engagement and story retelling. They will retell the stories in dramatic play centers. This enables students to build strong comprehension and a love of books!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are a diverse group of learners who enter my classroom with a range of prior experiences. They are coming from diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds within the community. They are excited and open to all different approaches to learning. Our classroom provides a place of support and consistency in their lives. These kindergarteners are eager to learn and grow and will jump at every opportunity to do so. Their enthusiasm is contagious!
I focus on providing my students with the opportunities they need to become successful readers.
This begins through developing a love of listening to reading. We sit together on the rug listening and reading stories, talking about stories, and sharing stories. Students are learning at different paces and engaging in many learning opportunities throughout the day. They cheer and clap when a story ends; they beg to hear it one more time. And when they are ready, they reenact these stories as they become readers themselves.
My Project
So, what exactly does emergent text even mean? An emergent text is a familiar story with characters and a plot that can be easily retold. Think: The Little Red Hen, The Three Bill Goat's Gruff, Red Riding Hood. But, there are even more texts that students can use to bridge the space between listening to stories and reading stories.
The materials in my project will allow students to have a variety of emerging readers in their possession in the classroom.
They will be able to keep these books with them in their book bags. They will use them to develop the foundational reading skills necessary to become a successful reader.
If you could only hear the excitement in their voices, the changes in intonation, the details they have gathered in their memories that come alive when these familiar books land at their fingertips! These students are completely enthralled by emergent reader tests; familiar stories that can be easily retold. Students listen to these stories during read aloud. They then develop an understanding of the setting, characters, and storyline. We need emergent readers - TheLittle Red Hen Big Book, Corduroy, The Carrot Seed, Harry the Dirty Dog and more - to increase their reading engagement and story retelling. They will retell the stories in dramatic play centers. This enables students to build strong comprehension and a love of books! Having these books accessible to them is pivotal in developing early reading skills. It will allow them to find the books they enjoy and share them with friends during partner reading.
While we successfully used several emergent texts last year, after attending a training earlier this summer, I realized it was not quite enough. They need more options for this unit of study. They need the chance to develop their love of reading with a variety of book choices. I hope you will help us reach this goal and contribute to the love of literature beginning at a young age!
