I strive to foster independence in my students, which allows them to have a sense of pride and feelings of accomplishment. This encourages problem-solving when my students will be faced with challenges in the future.
I teach in a classroom where half of the day instruction is in English, and half of the day instruction is in Spanish.
I have both native Spanish and native English speakers in my class, as well as students who speak many other languages at home. In our class, my students are becoming readers and writers in both Spanish and English! Our diverse students love to learn!
Our school is comprised of kindergarten through second grade students. A quarter of those students are native Spanish speakers, and half of our school is learning to read and write in Spanish. This project will add diverse early chapter books to our school's bookroom - a room where books are leveled and stored for teachers to check out and use with small groups of students in the classroom. I will use these books in my classroom with small groups of students during guided reading. They will take them home to share with their families for reading homework. It is so important for students to see themselves reflected in the class curriculum. Adding these books will help students feel more connected to school and more engaged in what they are reading.
