Help me give my students a novel to relate to in the classroom, The Hate U Give.

A large percentage of my students have never read a novel cover to cover and are in 9th grade. They are frustrated by dated texts, old English words, and characters that they cannot relate to in any way. My students love when I bring in a book of my own library from home to share with them; books that have characters that sound like them, look like them, and have been through similar experiences. The building I teach in is the most ethnically diverse in our large district. I need a class set of a of multi cultural young adult novels that will engage them while driving their reading levels up and increasing their vocabulary.
The book list available to my 9th grade students needs an update. As a teacher, I am asking my students to analyze texts, engage with them, and analyze complex characters. It is hard to motivate them to accomplish these tasks when the book choices for whole class readings are underwhelming to them and not relevant to today's society. I recently completed research on the effects of using contemporary literature in the classroom. Enormous successes in the classrooms are being had by teachers using literature that is contemporary, relevant, and that is centralized around a social justice issue.
The book I am requesting for this project, The Hate U Give, is an engaging story with multiple racial perspectives, complex/dynamic characters, and a fantastic connection to racial injustice issues that many of my students hear about every day either from friends, family, or the media.
