This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach in a title 1, high poverty, elementary school in a high-need community. Regardless of what our students lack economically and academically, they come to school every day motivated to learn. I am just as motivated as them. I will not allow the lack of money to be the excuse for our students not learning and growing equal to their peers.
Socrates said, "Education is the kindling of a flame, not the filling of a vessel." My personal challenge this year is to invest in my students academically and personally.
We have to challenge ourselves to meet all of our students' needs.
My Project
Students will read more if they have books they can relate to and enjoy. These books are titles that my students have actually requested. These authors are also popular in my classroom, so they will be read over and over again! Repeated reading is an academic practice which aims at increasing students oral reading fluency. So it's important to have books they want to read.
Reading fluently is truly the most important skill any student can have.
My students not only participate in guided reading they have an opportunity to read independently daily. They take truly advantage of it. These new books will make our classroom library even better. Most importantly, students will have more books at their disposal.
