Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
During independent reading, I feel good as I circulate among my students talking with them about what they are reading. They are truly engaged in their books, however, our class library is small, our school has no librarian, and I'm running out of high-interest books for them to read.
My students come from challenging backgrounds.
The majority of them come from impoverished families struggling to make ends meet while at the same time trying to shield their families from the pitfalls of a rough community. Many of these kids are English Learners. Even so, the teachers at our school have committed ourselves to providing the a top-notch education! Our classrooms are engaging and rigorous despite the budge cuts bestowed upon our school. Last year, I began introducing techniques from Reader's Workshop into the curriculum and saw a 20% increase in my students' proficiency on the state test in reading. My goal is to provide these kids even more opportunities to read.
My Project
In August, I attended the Reader's Workshop Institute at Teacher's College Columbia University to learn more about reading strategies that I could bring into my classroom. Within the first day, it was very apparent that my biggest challenge would be providing my students with high-interest books that would not only engage them in their independent reading, but also provide them opportunities to have meaningful discussions about what they are reading with each other using strategies that we are learning in class.
The donations of these books will greatly impact my students by providing them with high-interest books for their independent reading.
Engaging themselves in these books will allow them to become better readers and achieve 7th grade proficiency on the state exam. Ultimately, providing these books will fan the sparks that ignite the fire (a love of reading) that will guide them toward a successful future and provide a life time of joy.
