My students need engaging books to get them excited about reading again. In a survey over 80% of my student said they would self-identify as avid readers in elementary school. Only 15% feel that way now.
Just like every other teacher, I believe my students are the best and most deserving. They are funny, creative, and full of life. Our school serves a mix of economic ranges and our county’s largest ELL population. In fact, one of my English 11 classes is designed specifically for these students new to our country and culture. My students are eager to please and build collaborative relationships. They are just like other students: love their phones, fortnite, free food, and a teacher that validates them. They want to like reading, but haven’t had the time or opportunity to discover reading materials that interest them.
My Project
In a recent survey, over 80% of my students self-identified as avid readers in elementary schools. Only 15% feel that way now. Building readers now improves the likelihood of becoming lifelong learners. My classroom library is old and has very few Young Adult options. The students spend long periods of time lookin through the library and then find nothing. On a teacher salary, I can’t afford to buy them a brand new library full of engaging and new books. I need your help! My students are craving new reading material to engage and inspire them while also improving their reading skills. A large number of my students come from low-income families or are English Language Learners and either can’t afford to buy new books at home or don’t have access to accessible texts.
