Help me give my students engaging books so they not only learn to read but develop a love for reading. The books being purchased range from graphic novels to award winning chapter books.
I teach 5th grade at a Title I school which means that most of my students are on free or reduced-price lunches. Due to limited funding, my students have limited access to exciting books unless I use my personal money to purchase the engaging, interesting books.
When given the opportunity, my students never cease to amaze me of the abilities that they are capable of when they are given the right tools.
I find that my 5th-grade students tend to teach me more than I teach them every year. Because my students are limited in the resources they have access to, I can only imagine what they would accomplish if they were given the resources they actually wanted and thought were interesting.
My Project
Children need to know that reading can be exciting and engaging rather than dull and boring; the few engaging chapter books and graphic novels that I currently have in my classroom are constantly going through student's hands, and they can not get enough of them.
Students who read engaging, exciting books begin to develop a love for reading!
Encouraging students to read for enjoyment is a perfect way to build better readers. Graphic novels and thrilling chapter books are a gateway to better reading skills for reluctant readers.
There is a Chinese Proverb that states, "I hear and I forget, I see and I remember, I do and I understand." My students need as many engaging books as they can get so that they can learn that the more they read, the more they learn and understand.
