Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Over 90% percent of our school's population is at or below the poverty line. Due to this fact, many have experienced trauma and are unable to afford supplies to help them be successful in learning. Our school is approximately 50% ESL. My classroom consists of Latino, Black, Asian, Pacific Islander, and White students. Some are refugees.
Our students love to learn, are loving and lovable, and deserve the chance to have the tools needed to help them successfully learn!
They are so proud when they understand a concept, and love to help each other, whether with classwork, tying shoes, or helping when a classmate is hurt or sick. They excel in empathy!
My Project
Currently, the majority of the books in our classroom are on bookshelves or stored in cardboard boxes that the students cannot access due to specific organization. I have a few plastic baskets with books the students can take books from. I would like to use the 3 Little Sprouts and Hurricane collapsible storage boxes to better sort books by theme, and for level, and easily scaffold reading by directing students to the animal themed box of books best suited to their zone of proximal development.
These storage boxes are engaging and will keep students excited and interested in choosing the books they want from them!
When book levels are assigned to students, they choose from a specific book bin until they have "graduated" from it by demonstrating comprehension and fluency in those books, and move on to another bin.
