I am an art teacher, so I have the unique experience of seeing every student in my building. I am so lucky to teach all 570 of my hardworking students who I see persevere every day. Over 80% of my student population is below the poverty line and over 70% of my student population speaks English as a second language. This makes my job as an art teacher so important.
My students find success in communicating visually.
I am often the one chance they have, each day, to communicate an idea effectively without having to use words.
My Project
As teachers, we all know how important it is and how a child's life can be greatly improved by fostering a love of reading. I think that non-educators, wouldn't disagree with any of this, but I also think they may not know how powerful reading can actually be. Reading reduces stress, increases vocabulary, and improves memory. Reading helps you sleep better and can improve your focus and concentration. Reading helps you become a better communicator and writer. Readers develop creativity and cultivate empathy in students.
As an art teacher, I want to create with my students but I also want to include as many art-related books and games as I can.
I want my students to see books about artists, artworks, and art movements. I want to show them how fun looking at art can be. I want them to see how fun drawing can be by playing a game.
