Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 5th and 6th grade students at an innovative charter school in Chicago's south side. Our school values children's academic, physical, and emotional growth. My 5th and 6th graders are veracious readers. They are continually looking for engaging texts to read. They each have a unique set of interests and tastes, especially when it comes to books.
Most of my students are Latino and many of them are English Language Learners.
The majority of them come from low income homes and don't always have access to literature-rich environments. I hope to provide them an abundance of literature at school so that they can better determine what they enjoy reading.
My Project
My 5th and 6th graders need new and exciting books that they can dive into at the end of the year. Each day, I have 25 students that meet in small groups for book clubs in the middle of the day. These students are motivated readers, but have read many of the book sets that are available to them at their level.
I want to provide my book club students with diverse options to read for book club this year and for years to come.
I chose a variety of different texts to appeal to my students: fantasy, realistic fiction, historical fiction, and culturally relevant texts.
In their book clubs students will read, write, and discuss the text with their peers. Book club allows students to take ownership of their reading and set the agenda for their discussions. Through these texts, I hope my students can deeply and critically about the stories they are reading. Our titles include Dead End in Norvelt, The Epic Fail of Arturo Zamora, Wolf Hollow and more.
