Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher in a low-income school, my students face challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, they come to school each day eager to learn, and there is a sense of joy in the classroom. I have 16 boys and 4 girls in my 4th grade class. My students are confident and active learners, and they thrive when they have ownership over their learning.
Recently my students have been asking for more ownership over where they sit in the classroom.
My students wish to have a place to sit away from their desk, in which they can be comfortable, but remain focused so they can collaborate and productively complete their work and reach their goals.
My Project
My students need flexible spaces to spread out, learn, and collaborate. Students rotate to 3-4 learning stations each day in both reading and math to complete a personalized learning plan. In order to make learning personalized, seating needs to be personalized as well.
The portable lap desks/laptop stands/writing tables will empower students to select a productive seat and take ownership over their learning, whether they are working collaboratively or independently.
How can I expect my students to solve problems and make choices independently if I constantly make choices for them? My classroom environment should encourage collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking. This simply cannot be done when kids are forced to sit at their desks all day. Kids need flexible seating in the classroom.
