My co-teacher and I have decided to split up our classroom into students with higher OST (Ohio State Testing) scores from freshmen year and lower OST scores in order to best move each group of students forward in their learning. In a classroom of 34 students, we just weren't having any luck in moving anyone forward because their needs were so broad. We now each have a classroom of 14-16 tenth grade students.
The students I have are struggling to engage with the materials I am currently using and I need to branch out to teach the standards in a new way.
My co-teacher did an amazing job of getting another class, we broke up into two ability groups, hooked on reading through the use of a novel at their reading level. These students are now reading aloud in class, following the standards and learning them, and comprehensively writing based on their knowledge of that novel. I want to do the same.
I feel that I need to try this approach with the reluctant readers I have in the other class. This is why I have chosen the novels, "Seven the Series." I can't wait to give them a try.
My Project
The novels in the series, "Seven the Series," are high interest but lower readability books and are listed as a great series for reluctant readers. I am asking for multiple copies of the seven different books. My goal is to get two or three students reading each book independently, then have them discuss the books in literature circles while also hitting reading and writing standards along the way.
My hope is that by engaging the students in books they want to read and can hold their attention, I can cover the necessary standards needed so they can be successful on their testing for graduation.
I will also be able to offer choice with multiple titles and copies.
