Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This is a K thru 5th grade elementary school. We work with students from a variety of different backgrounds based on culture, language, income levels, and special needs. We are a Title I school with all our students on free lunch. We have inclusion classrooms as well as dual language and traditional strand classrooms.
Our main goal for this project is for students to improve their reading math, science, and writing skills.
Unfortunately 80% of my class is performing below grade level and in dire need of support. We require materials that support critical interventions. Providing specific learning tasks will support students learning that is imperative for their future success in academics and personal and social growth. “You cannot uneducate the person who has learned to read.” (Cesar Chavez).
We have 545 students. The budget is stretched thin. Parents have had difficulty even providing the basics due to reduced employment hours. As a teacher, I supplied basic supplies myself at the beginning of the year. We try to provide additional materials each month for parents to pick up. We have a need for specific materials for reading, science, math, and writing.
My Project
All students will receive and use workbooks and math manipulatives during remote learning. I will plan lessons specifically using these materials to teach language and math skills each day.
Using workbooks during online instruction helps students who struggle with learning thru technology and gives parents support with work at home.
Workbooks and materials will make those connections between learning, applying what they learn, and a finished paper product that students can visually see as completed. Parents can also see how we teach the math skills with special materials and resources.
