My students come from a small, rural community. Our district is a Title I school with sixty-two percent of the population qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch. We are also seeing a growing population of ELL (English Language Learner) students from the Congo. 2nd grade is such an exciting group of mixed interests, abilities, and goals. Some of my students are learning to read, write, and count, while others are learning to explore, use critical thinking skills, and conduct experiments.
My goal is to give every student engaging materials to learn.
Our school population is changing. We are encountering more students who are coming to us with little or no support at home.
As my students make gains in my classroom, they begin to find pride in themselves. My classroom is about building skills. The work we do in this classroom is building relationships, staying with the group, following directions, and accessing general education content in different ways. We celebrate little wins together each day. My students walk into class every day full of life, ready to learn, and excited for what is in store for them.
My Project
These books, reading bench, and rug will continue to enhance the engaging classroom that I strive to create. My classroom library is a place that my students go to escape the stress in their daily lives by using books and having comfy places to relax and read.
My students would love to have a bright and soft rug to lay on while reading their new favorite books.
The bench is a place they can sit or do work. It converts from a sitting bench for 3 or 4 to a working table. I will be able to work with students in small groups or they can sit and work with their teams. I also plan to use the bench as an incentive for students who are giving best effort and showing respect.
