Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a School Psychologist in an urban school district. My students are very diverse with many of them coming from economically disadvantaged homes. 67% of them receive free or reduced-priced lunch and face various barriers to achieving academic success. They come from homes where food is scarce and where there is not enough money to pay for life's essentials such as clothing, utilities, and school supplies. Many have experienced trauma and have difficulty getting to school regularly. In fact, nearly 25% of my students are chronically absent from school.
My students are faced with difficult academic, social, and emotional demands daily.
They lack coping skills, strategies, work ethic and often require assistance to manage their stressors and difficult home life. There are many factors that contribute to a students missing school, poor grades, behavioral issues and lack of motivation.
My Project
My counseling students will have the opportunity to earn rewards (gift cards). They will have to develop a plan for academic and behavioral success and execute it. The goals will be to be engaged during group and participate in activities. Students will also be required to attend classes and improve overall grades.
They will be continually supported and encouraged to learn and grow within the school environment by working on strategies in the counseling groups.
The gift card incentive is what the students came up with as a reward for improving on their goals. These gift cards are an awesome motivator.
