Help me give my students the tools needed to honor their preferences for movement, fidgeting, and alternative seating that will contribute to better learning outcomes, attention, and behavior.
Benjamin Franklin said, "Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn." This is the philosophy I use daily in my classroom.
I provide an engaging classroom where the students are challenged to take ownership of their own learning.
The more I involve the kindergartners in their own learning, with hands-on activities, the stronger their motivation, excitement, and overall success will be.
My kindergarten students come from a wide range of backgrounds and life experiences. I teach at a Title l public charter school, where leadership and hands-on learning is the focus. The classrooms are inclusive, which allows the students to engage with each other and a variety of learning styles. Kindergarten is a half-day program, which provides the opportunity to teach the students in the morning and different students in the afternoon.
As a leadership-focused public charter school, the students are actively taught The 7 Habits of Happy Kids, from the Stephen Covey framework. The kindergartners know each habit and use these habits daily in the classroom to self-monitor their behavior, set goals, develop their own unique talents, and work together in a positive environment.
My Project
In today’s fast-paced world of instant gratification and narrowing attention spans, keeping a child engaged and sitting still in a classroom can be a challenging task. Many of my students have a constant need for sensory input and/or dynamic seating options.
Research supports the idea that alternative seating options can be used to improve attention in students.
Just as adults need to get up and take a walk or pace the room while we think and brainstorm, kids also need outlets for moving and fidgeting during the school day. The requested items of pillows, seats, fidgets, marbles, and building sticks will provide the much-needed outlet for them to be successful in the classroom.
As my kinders are given the opportunity to identify and honor their preferences for movement, fidgeting, and alternative seating, they will feel that their needs are being acknowledged. This will contribute to their increased engagement and motivation in the classroom. Thank you for believing in my kindergartners!
