My Students
My students are independent learners that enjoy sharing their learning in engaging ways. Through song, dance, body movements, etc., we are always finding ways to remember essential skills and concepts. We are learning to use sketch notes, digital technology, semantic maps, etc. to grow as 21st century learners. My students thrive when we are able to collaborate and learn from one another! As a Title 1 School, the majority of my students are from low income families and do not get the opportunity to interact in creative and new ways at home! Many of them are English Language Learners, or Special Education students, but we come from many different types of families and places around the world.
My students have a desire to create, design, test, and collaborate with their peers.
Recently, they have been allowed 15-20 minutes daily to work on anything associated with reading, writing, and designing. Many of them have designed digital comic strips, created power points that teach game strategies, drafted stories surrounded around symbolism and figurative language, etc. This new block of creative thinking time has empowered them to put learning into their hands.
My Project
21st century learners need a place where they can collaborate, think together, and learn in an comfortable environment. By providing them a space to do this, their engagement increases. And the more that the seating arrangement allows for collaboration and team building experiences the better! This is part of why companies such as Google are at the top of the job market!
My project is designed to create a space where students can learn together in exciting and engaging ways.
This project includes two soft sofa bags that can be used when students are playing together, battling one another on a computer, or many other ways. The project also provides them with a few engaging games they can use as learning tools to learn new concepts, particularly difficult material, and use for review activities. For an example, by using games such as Kerplunk! to encourage students to participate in a review, they are engaged and excited to get the right answer so they are the student who gets to pick from the pile. And when the balls crash to the floor, their just as excited to start over with a new question or concept! When they can review math strategies using Headbandz and/or charades using white board paper and chart markers, they are more likely to remember the material they are reviewing! And they will be able to do this in an environment that is inviting and welcoming. Hopefully this type of learning environment encourages them to pursuit jobs and careers in things they are passionate about, involved in and can be completely engaged in their work! This is what 21st century learners need as our world evolves to encourage people to love what they do and do what they love!
