My students need some basic furniture, learning centers, STEM games, and Magna-Tiles to foster a love of learning.
My classroom is filled with 41 enthusiastic 3rd grade students who were impacted by Hurricane Harvey in August 2017. Our elementary classroom received a great deal of water during the devastating storm. Unfortunately, some of the supplies that the children so eagerly brought in before the beginning of the school year were damaged in the storm. Additionally, classroom supplies, furniture and classroom manipulatives were also damaged.
Since the beginning of September, our 3rd grade classroom has been held in an unadorned computer lab on a junior high campus.
With the loss of books, supplies, and limited space, I have had to be extra resourceful in my teaching. Despite the circumstances, the students have adapted incredibly to this situation and continue to thrive.
I want to create an atmosphere in my classroom in which students feel comfortable, safe, and happy and are actively engaged and participating in what we are learning. My classroom is in need of some resources to help in this process.
My classroom would benefit from a variety of new manipulatives to practice math and science concepts.
I would like to place tangible objects into my students' hands to help them practice unfamiliar concepts. These new resources would be extremely beneficial to those needing remediation. I have selected many items to practice everyday concepts such as counting money to place value and number sense.
Some of the specific resources I have chosen include STEM resource kits including a Building Brick STEM Challenge kit and a Blocks and Blueprints kit. My hope is that my students will foster a love of learning as they build and create using these STEM activities.
I have also taken into consideration the environment in which these students can best use these materials. I have included in my project some items such as shelves and storage in which these new resources can be stored effectively and efficiently.
