My students need hands-on tools and manipulatives such as magnets and building bricks to develop critical thinking and problem solving skills while using kick bands to improve focus.
Our school has a diverse population of students. This school is a Title 1 school where all of the students at my school receive free or reduced price lunch. Our school also receives school wide Title 1 funding. Many students come from low-income families or nontraditional homes. Students at my school are inquisitive, compassionate, and creative.
My students cherish their opportunity for learning because they want to become successful one day.
I believe it is my job to not only teach the students the curriculum, but also teach them to love learning. In my classroom, I encourage students to develop social skills, build a community, and engage in their learning. I know that what my students learn now will impact them for a lifetime.
My Project
This project will provide students with tools and resources to build and design projects of their own. I plan on using STEM Bins daily in my classroom to promote critical thinking and problem solving skills. Students will be given a tool and develop as many of the objects on their list as possible. It will be exciting to see what they are able to build once they have the right materials.
Students are inspiring and creative individuals that need an outlet to show their abilities and talents in a place that is often too structured to do so.
Throughout the year, our class will take photos of our creation and develop a STEM binder to model our different creations and see our growth throughout the year.
The items on this list will offer a variety of manipulatives to the students including Popsicle sticks with Velcro, craft sticks, Play dough, magnets, pipe cleaners, masking tape, dominoes, and more. I have requested pencil pouches to easily store supplies in the classroom for easy access. In order to build the item, students will choose one manipulative and a set of task cards to begin building items listed on the task cards such as houses, bridges, and more. Once students finish their object, they problem solve ways to make it better, if it is stable, and explain why they built it in the way they chose.
On top of items for STEM Bins, I am requesting Kick Bands, which are bouncy chair fidget bands for each student's desk in the classroom. Second Graders have LOTS of energy, and this will let those with or without diagnosed conditions exert some of their extra energy without distracting others. This allows the students to focus on learning and being engaged in the classroom.
