Engage Smith's Mathematicians in the Learning Journey, Not Worksheets
Help me give my students basic calculators to focus on problem solving and application instead of computation and supplies that increase engagement in their interactive notebooks, whiteboard practice, and math card sort posters.
My 7th and 8th grade math classes consist of students from a variety of mathematical levels, but they all have one very important characteristic in common: the ability to succeed at mathematics with the right support and mindset.
"The difference between successful and unsuccessful students is less about the content they learn and more about their mindsets." -Jo Boaler.
My students enter my math class with a variety of perspectives about math. Some have developed a passion for math from a young age that has grown throughout their educational years. Others enter the classroom with negative beliefs about their mathematical abilities based on experiences that diminished their math confidence and outlook.
My goal as their teacher is to show my students that everyone is capable of learning the content and appreciating the mathematical connections that exist in our world within and outside the classroom. After a year in my class, my students understand the scientific truth about growth mindset and learn that perseverance is one of the key facts to success.
My Project
In my classes, students are encouraged to tackle challenges with the understanding that only from failure are we able to grow and develop our abilities. In order to foster mathematical growth mindsets in all my students, I need resources that create an equitable learning environment.
A set of basic calculators for the classroom will allow my diverse students from different economic and cultural backgrounds to avoid time-consuming computation and participate in mathematical problem solving and application.
Providing students with the same technology is an equalizer and encourages students to collaborate on the same level instead of one where some students have graphing calculators and others do not.
Additionally, supplies that reduce the amount of time spent in class on basic computation and worksheets increases engagement and intrinsic motivation and participation.
