As teachers in an ICT setting and low-income/high poverty school district, our students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, we are looking to keep things simple and provide our students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
Our students are courageous and very motivated.
They like to move, they love to read and love lots of positive attention. Many of them are being raised in single parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical". From the minute they walk in the door of our classroom we focus on their potential and growth while they are with us. We may not be able to control their home lives, however, we can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, we are hopeful to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of academic excellence.
The literacy-based items that we are requesting for our students already have a "home" in our ICT classroom. In other words, we know exactly where everything will go. All materials will be used during reading workshop. We just need your help in getting everything through our door!
Engagement is everything.
Research has shown that the amount of time kids spend reading makes the biggest difference to their success as readers. New leveled books added to our classroom library will further engage our early readers. Children love the feeling of new books, especially when they are at their independent reading level. These books will improve their learning and school lives.
We will use these leveled book libraries to aid us in the process of becoming life-long readers. The donations to this project will help to improve our students' literacy abilities.
As the teachers, we have done extensive reading and have attended professional development on Reading Workshop in the primary grades. Yet we truly need your support to make this a reality. Thanks!
