My students need Lenovo laptops to add additional technology to our clasroom. Our goal is to get to a ratio of 1:1, and this will move us closer to reaching that goal!
I teach at a public elementary school with a diverse population of students. Our school is home to families from a variety of ethnic backgrounds and economic statuses. We are a large school with over 1,000 students. While this size presents some challenges, it also allows for our teachers and students to get to know and learn from people in all different walks of life. I love watching the students form friendships that they may not otherwise have the opportunity to build.
My students come from hard-working families.
Many of the students spend a lot of time in aftercare programs while their parents are working to provide for them. I work with many students who are English Language Learners, students with special needs and students who come from economically disadvantaged families. These conditions, along with may others, affect student learning in the classroom. Helping my students to learn and grow on a daily basis is all the more rewarding as they strive to overcome their individual challenges.
My Project
Technology has become a constant in our daily lives. The kids that I teach have not known a world without the internet or quick access to entertainment and information. They use smart phones and tablets on a regular basis and are typically more engaged when information is presented electronically.
In order to connect with these digital citizens, it is vital to incorporate technology into the classroom.
Unfortunately, computers and tablets are expensive. Combining what is provided by my school district, devices provided by our school PTA and tablets purchased on my own, I have 7 devices available to use for up to 25 students at a time. Many programs that I use require one of those devices to be used by the teacher, which causes more students to share a single device.
This project will add 2 laptop computers to my classroom. We will have fewer students per device and will be able to make greater use of the multitude of resources that are available online and through apps. The addition of these laptops will also provide increased opportunities for my students to use tools to differentiate their learning. Students in need of enrichment can use the devices to take their learning farther and students who are struggling with concepts can use online resources to bridge gaps and build understanding. The possibilities are as endless!
